This position is designed for students who seek advanced experience in ceramic art
and have already completed an undergraduate degree (either a BA or BFA in art).
These students enter the program with the intent of strengthening their portfolios
for application to graduate school or to refine their skills and qualifications for other
professional positions. Assistants work under the guidance of a faculty member,
participate in departmental critiques, and assist the Department of Art and Design
in a number of ways.
The student will be given their own personal space in the advanced studio area,
24/7 access to the studio, and access to all materials and firings needed to complete
their work. In exchange for studio space, firings, and access, the Assistant agrees to
contribute on average 20 hours of work a week to the Department. This work can
vary from loading kilns, mixing glazes, to installing student art. Additionally, the
student will assist a professor with one class per semester (this time commitment
will vary from week to week, and not count towards the 20 hours).
Additionally for AY 2015, there is a stipend of $1500 per semester for each Assistant, as well as campus housing that will be provided.
List of Jobs and Responsibilities
20 hours per week, assisting with the functions of the Art and Design Department,
including:
Meet with Department Technician & Assistant and Prof. Dunn weekly at a
mutually agreed upon time
Assist in supervision and instruction of underclass campus employees,
Load and fire kilns – electric, gas, and wood
Assist Prof. Dunn with classes when needed
Assist in cleaning and maintain a highly organized and functional ceramics
studio and wood shop
Mix and maintain glazes, slips, and other studio supplies
Special projects related to studio function and determined at weekly
meeting.For example, demonstrations at High School recruitment days,
helping with gallery exhibitions, picking up or delivering student work to off-
campus venues, etc
An exhibition and presentation held in the Spring which demonstrates your
artistic progress
Additional duties as assigned
