COMMUNITY CLAY. Every semester the Department of Art & Design teaches a six week community ceramics class on Saturday mornings. A different topic is covered each session. Past topics have included throwing on the potter’s wheel, making handles, salt firing, raku firing, making forms with lids, and hand building. Students advanced through beginning are taught in small classes that encourage individual expression and growth. Students are also allowed ample work time in the studio outside of class to practice their skills and enhance their creativity. Upper class Adrian College ceramics students and Adrian Art and Design Department Teaching Assistants assist in teaching the course.

Next Community Clay: to be announced

Beginners through experienced clay students will learn hand-building with slabs and coils and further refine techniques for throwing on the potters wheel relative to pouring forms. Students will also explore firing finished work in a wide variety of kiln types including electric, gas reduction, salt, soda, and wood. Class will be taught by Adrian College Professors Pi Benio and Bryan VanBenschoten, the former head potter at the Henry Ford. Enrollment will be limited to the first 17 students to register. Classes will be held in the fully equipped ceramics studio in Mahan Hall on the Adrian College campus and held Saturdays. Generous studio time will be available during the week. Cost for tuition, studio time, and all materials is $160.00. Half scholarships are available for HS students. For further information call: (517)265-5161 extension x4382.
