Art History 232: Representations of Gender in Art
In Art History 232 Representations of Gender in Art, students learn about feminist and masculinity theories and their applications in art and art history. Because the course’s subject matter deals in part with the exclusion of women from the art historical cannon, the class also features a research component in which students investigate a woman artist from Michigan. In this way, the project not only serves to improve students’ research and writing skills, but to also carve a place for women who have been traditionally ignored by historians.
On this site you’ll find the biographies of Michigan women artists, as well as images, bibliographies, interviews, and other research materials compiled by art history students at Adrian College. Teachers are invited to use this information in their classrooms to educate their students about art history, gender, writing, research, and other fields.
